The European Capital of Culture – Pafos2017 welcomes one of the greatest personalities of oriental music, one of the most important instrument players in the world (ney, baglama, zourna and percussion) and one of the most charismatic musicians of the Mediterranean and the world. Omar Faruk Tekbilek has been active in the international music scene for over thirty years, during which the legendary musician has created work deeply rooted in tradition and is full of fertile influences from contemporary music trends. Tekbilek is inspired by religious mysticism and the corresponding philosophical theories, local tradition, romance and imagination. Considering himself a messenger of peace, he collaborates with musicians from different countries and cultures. This time he will perform with Zacharias Spyridakis (Cretan lyra) and Giannis Koutis (oud/vocals).

Within the frame of the “Architecture as a Tool for Reshaping” project, the Neapolis University Programme in Architecture and the Postgraduate Programme in Landscape Architecture, present student projects that focus on Pafos and its wider area.Withrespectfortheenvironmentandhistory, future architects select spaces in the city and the district of Pafos and transform them into venues of encounter and play, venues for the development and exchange of ideas, venue where democracy is applied and culture is produced. The exhibition also includes the projects of the “Second Nature” artistic project, which was also organised by Pafos2017 Organisation.
Curators: S. Xenopoulos, Ε. Dova, Α. Sivitanidou. With the cooperation of the Neapolis University School of Architecture, Engineering, Land and Environmental Sciences and the Cyprus Architects Association.

The Rimini Protokoll group is considered one of the most important, pioneering and influential theatre groupsinEuropeduringthelastfewyears.Itconsists of Helgard Haug, Stefan Kaegi and Daniel Wetzel, who have been working together since 2002 and have been constantly developing new theatrical forms. In 2017 the great artists will include Pafos in their programme, with an en-route-performance in the city centre for 50 viewers at a time. A special soundtrack will accompany the performance in streets, parking spaces, churches and courtyards, thus, changing the way we view and experience our city.

The Cypriot Venus, goddess of mortals and immortals, comes to life through the art of the great masters from the Renaissance to the Baroque and from Realism to Impressionism and beyond.Entitled“TheVenusParadox”,thisexhibition focuses on Venus as mother, woman, mistress and seductress, amidst love, life and death – through enticing stories of passion, envy, strife and deception. This is an unprecedented collaboration with 17 leading museums and private collections in Europe and America.

OREKA TX
This extremely dynamic ensemble of Basque musicians, whom we met at the ‘Roots’ dance performance last June, returns to showcase the Txalaparta not only as a music instrument but also as a linking factor uniting the musicians with the audience. Oreka TX use improvisation and explore the potential of this instrument in music, rhythms and forms that go beyond the strictly local Basque tradition. The group was created in 2001 and its main members are Harkaitz Martinez de San Vicente and Mikel Ugarte. In their 15 years of work, Oreka TX have worked with important musicians and bands from all over the world and have won various awards, such as the Latin Grammy Award.

TOURS & TRACES – KEDARES

The Tours and Traces programme visits, Kedaresa small village with special natural beauty and history. According to myths, during ancient times, King Nicocles (Kinyras) had his summer home in Kedares. During Frankish and Venetian rule, Kedareswas owned by important feudal lords of Cyprus and members of the Lusignan House.
Participants in this European Capital of Culture Pafos2017 programme will visit the renovated Cultural Centre, they will get information on the old church of the village, the ancient caves and they will pay a visit to the famous “Trypimeni”(pierced) stone, which in the pastwas thought to have healing properties. There will also be a visit-tour at the glass factory of artist George Papadopoulos and the famous women’s coffee-shop.

José María Jiménez’s ensemble is composed of musicians, singers and dancers who present a tribute to the top guitarist Paco de Lucia, as well as a composition of flamenco and gypsy jazz. The great musician of gypsy origin, a virtuoso of the flamenco guitar, was born in San Sebastian. Ever since he was 16 years old, he participated in the most prestigious flamenco school with Emilio Maya. He accompanies famous flamenco dancers and singers like Chonchi Heredia, Titi Flores, El Lebrijano, José Mercé, Potito, Mario Maya and Antonio Canales. He has also composed music for the performances of the dancer Nuria Cazorla with flautist Omar Acosta, and the Flamenco ballet of Angela Cruz, based on the poetry of Federico Garcia Lorca.

ZENTRALKAPELLE BERLIN & WINDKRAFT BAND
The Zentralkapelle Berlin from Germany and the Windkraft Band from Cyprus come together in a musical encounter. The two bands performed together in Cyprus in October 2015 and their cooperation continued as they met again in Berlin and in Cyprus in July 2016. This year, the two bands will amuse the audience for the third time, with a rich musical programme that includes sounds from the German Blasmusik, well-known funk and pop melodies, latin and traditional rythms, in an attempt to bring the audience closer to the sound of their wind instruments and the spirit of this joint venture.
