The European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport visits Pafos

The European Commissioner for the Education, Culture, Youth and Sport mr Tibor Navracsics visited Pafos, the European Capital of Culture on Tuesday 21st March 2017.

The European Commissioner made its first stop in Pafos with a visit at the Archaelogical Park and the exhibition of the European Capital of Culture Pafos2017 “Depicting the Invisible – Christian Art” by Christoforou Collection at En Plo Gallery. The exhibition had its opening just a week ago by the Archibishop of Cyprus.

The Commissioner visited Pafos since it’s the European Capital of Culture for 2017 and during his short visit had meeting with the Pafos2017 Chairman Dr.Christos Patsalides and Members of the Board of Directors. The Pafos2017 Chairman welcomed the Commissioner at Pafos2017 Headquarters and explained the history of the Pafos2017 Organization since its establishment, resulting to the same comment by the European Advisory Committee that “Pafos is a very good example of how a small city can put together a suitable programme to be a European Capital of Culture”. He also mentioned the need of the EU to create an official body consisting of past European Capitals of Culture in order to evaluate and assess past experiences and good practices.

The Commissioner expressed his satisfaction for visiting Pafos the European Capital of Culture for 2017 and welcomed the Chairman’s suggestions. He also confirmed the role of the European Capital of Culture and refer to the development of the institution from 1985 until today.

Mr. Navracsics is in Cyprus due to his participation at the Official opening of the Council of Europe Conference of the Cyprus Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers “Securing Democracy through Education” happening in Nicosia on the 22nd and 23rd March 2017.
