The Pafos POED (Pancyprian Organization of Greek Teachers) Cultural Committee in collaboration with the University of Neapolis and the Municipality of Pafos held a conference under the title “The educators support the vision of Pafos as a candidate city for the title of the European Capital of Culture in 2017”. The Conference took place on 27/03/2012 at the premises of the Neapolis University.
The conference was greeted by the Deputy Mayor of Paphos, Mr. Makis Roussis, the Rector of the University of Neapolis, Professor Elias Ntinenis, the president of the District Committee of POED Pafos, Mr. George Georgiades and the president of the Cultural Commission of POED Pafos, Mr. Christos Hadjiloizou.
A presentation by the Executive Manager of the Pafos 2017 Office, Mr. Ektor Tsatsoulis was then in order, who among other things said: “We undertook a project which aims to realize a long-term vision that can very well seal the identity and the course Pafos may take for the decades to come. This is a true opportunity for our town and for this reason each and every one of us both individually and collectively should support. Because Pafos can pull this through, longs for and deserves the title!”. Following Mr. Tsatsoulis’ presentation the Dean of the School of Architecture of the Neapolis University, Ms. Cleopatra Karaletsou was welcomed on the floor and with Ms. Evanthia Dova, lecturer in the same School of the Neapolis University, gave a presentation which bore the title: “The Open-Air Factory concept: Transforming the gaps into cores of cultural hotspots”. During their speech they did not neglect to point out: “Pafos is a town which is taken over by cars and because of that forgot all about its historical background. With our proposal we aim to build an urban people-friendly environment introducing a lifestyle which makes the most of Pafos by highlighting its multiple historical and cultural levels thus linking continents and bridging cultures. By doing so, we hope for Pafos to become accessible to its inhabitants and sort of taken back by them”.
The conference concluded with a discussion facilitated by Ms. Angeliki Sivitanidou, lecturer of Architecture at the Neapolis University. The topic pursuit: “means and methods that can be employed by the educators in order for them to better support Pafos’ campaign towards a prominent European future”.
